I Have Very Poor Impulse Control

Yesterday after work I paid a visit to Bed, Bath, and Beyond. We needed a new shower curtain liner. And some clearance Christmas chocolate. There just happens to be a Michael's right next door. Me being me, and completely without self control where crafty supplies are concerned, decided there wouldn't be any harm in taking a quick looksie.

So I went in. Did you know they have a whole section devoted to making headbands? Because they do. And 40% off of all baskets! But back to the headbands. It's basically a plain plastic headband/embellishment/hot glue gun affair, with lots of rhinestones, feathers, and sequins to make your temples really stand out from the crowd.

Now, most of these supplies were not really my cup of tea, but I did end up finding this one gem:

I have plans to put it on a shoulder. Or maybe a ruched side-waist. Hmm.

While standing near the checkout counter, I couldn't help being distracted by the inexpensive stationery. They do it on purpose, you know. Place adorable, $1.50-per-packet notecards, stickers, notebooks, and recipe cards right where you're already forced to stand. While I was stuck in front of them, I couldn't stop these two cards (six to a packet!) from jumping into my basket.

I really have to start writing more letters.

The Pink Collar Caper!

Can't you see this halter dress being worn to scamper around some ancient old city in the heat of a European summer? Climbing out of boats in Venice, boarding a train in Lyon? Solving a mystery accessorized with big sunglasses and handsome journalist?

It's being made up in a pale pink cotton oxford, with just the right amount of body to do that skirt justice. Hopefully, this style will become the ne plus ultra of my summer dress collection.

I know it's only January (with February right around the corner!) but I couldn't resist making a little spring dress. My mother picked up this polka-dot corduroy at Jo-Ann's late last summer, and at first, I couldn't decide what to do with it. I'm not really a brown kinda girl, you know. But it's got a lovely light feel and moderate drape, so I couldn't let the yardage go to waste!

So nice and simple! Here's my version:

I made only a couple of changes. I shortened the (shorter) sleeves about an inch, and added some bias-strip trim. You can see this more clearly in the picture below. In fact, I decided to make a quick (read: terribly poor) MS Paint lesson on incorporating this technique in a pattern. I sort of made it up as I went along, so I'm not sure if it's been covered elsewhere! Here it is.

Also, for some reason, one of my boobs looks way bigger than the other. I don't think it's like this in real life. At least, I hope not!

Conclusion: I love this dress. It's making me long for cold lemonade and Saturdays spent antiquing.

Zig-Zag Straight Into My Heart

This little number marks a sharp departure for me. Ever since my recent wardrobe overhaul, it's been all, "jewel tones this," and "interesting details that." Which is wonderful. It works very well for me and helps me get dressed in the morning.

But when I saw this fabric, I couldn't say no.

I used vintage McCall's 5746. Shortened, of course.

The fabric is from the upholstery section of Mood in New York.

At Year's End...

It's been quiet around these parts lately, huh? Things get busy toward the end of the year; people rush (I rush) to do all the things they wanted to before it's too late. Cramming six months' or so worth of activities and projects into two!

Let's see. In the past two-ish months, I've:

-- Made hundreds (thousands?) of cookies and cinnamon rolls.
-- Made red ribbon bows by the dozen.
-- Participated in a family cook-off (would've won, too, if I'd chosen a recipe to better suit the judges. As it was, mussels apparently don't hold a candle to ribs)!
-- Learned to play several new complicated strategy-based board games (yay Carcassonne!).
-- Enjoyed the simple pleasures and comforts of home.

Here are a few peeks into my cozy goings-on recently:

Vogue 1251, The Jane Eyre Dress, Finished

Reader, I've finished (forgive me, I couldn't help myself)!

Isn't it pretty? I had another collar--one in two pieces--that turned out a bit too small. I went to the flea market, and like magic, this pretty little scrap of delicate lace was waiting for me to scoop it up!

You can see in this picture that it doesn't quite meet in the back. I don't mind, though.

The pattern has been modified a bit in my finished dress. I raised the neckline about two inches all around, and changed the straight skirt to a semi-circle. Other than my changes, this dress has some neat details. I love the zippers on the sleeves, and the fun way they're pieced together! It adds some interest to what is a rather austere garment.

There is one little problem with this dress, though. The sleeves. As drafted, there was a ridiculous amount of ease in the sleeves. They were billowy and unflattering. So I rashly decided to take out some yardage. While the sleeves fit well and look good, they are a bit, um, restrictive. The fabric is wool (I suspect a blend, though), and has zero give whatsoever. As long as I don't try to reach for anything above shoulder height, it should be fine!

I've been not a very busy bee lately. Actually, a lazy bee would be quite accurate!

I'm out of work (but I'll be starting soon! Yay!) and all I want to do with myself is read and bake cookies. And then eat said cookies. I've even started writing several novels (all pretty terrible, if I do say so myself!) in my spare time.

One thing I haven't been doing too much of is sewing. I don't have many clothes. Changing body shape made most of my old clothes obsolete. You'd think, though, that this would be motivation to sew like a madwoman and make a whole new wardrobe. A year ago, it would have. Lately, however, I've been thinking about things. I like having little. I like the feeling of looking in my closet and intimately knowing everything there. And intensely loving everything there. However, it means that I'll be spacing out projects.

When I look into my wardrobe, I see solid, rich colors in flattering shapes. Simple dresses and separates that combine to make my style completely me. The outfit below represents my style perfectly.

And would do it even better if my sister hadn't cut off my Weejuns.

This skirt is one of my recent projects. The silk suiting is slightly nubby and slubby in this gorgeous golden color, and the pleats are one of my favorite details.

Of course, we can't make everything we wear (well, we could, but you know what I mean!). And buying only a few things has allowed me to focus on good, sturdy, and slightly luxurious ones. Like this sweater, a super-soft cashmere cable-knit.

I'm glad of my new thoughtfulness in dressing and consumption; I hope it'll help me in my ongoing quest to become a responsible, thoughtful, mature person of the world. What do you think of the new trend toward reducing consumption?

Home, Again

Oh readers,

I've had a very busy summer. I'm done with culinary school and home in New Jersey, where I've been filling the past week with reading, kittens, and visits with friends. It's been idyllic!

I'm not working yet, but I had a job interview a couple of days ago in Princeton, which left me very hopeful! Afterward I passed a bookstore and couldn't help going in. This is my newest acquisition (I know it's terribly cliche, but if forced to name my favorite book on pain of death, with no time to think, I'm pretty sure "JANE EYRE!" is what would escape my lips).

This book has been a gateway to the rest of my Jane Eyre mania. After reading it again, I had to watch the new film adaptation. And, my word, is it wonderful.

I've seen quite a few screen adaptations (five, at last count) and this may be my favorite. Although it's a movie, and not a miniseries (and thus has the limitation of time), the pertinent parts were all there, and it wasn't significantly changed (I'm looking at you, 1997 Charlotte Gainsbourg version) from the novel. I've watched it twice, and may again, before it has to go back to the library. The man playing Mr. Rochester is wonderful. The girl playing Jane is even better (she does look miserable sometimes, but I don't mind).

I tried to find a good picture of him fully dressed, but it was difficult. Hmm.

My only problem is the one I usually have: they're both just too darn good looking!

Anyway, this movie has influenced my sewing somewhat. I've started Vogue 1251 in navy ???. They said it was wool but I have my doubts. I did a burn test, but it was inconclusive (melted, then turned to ash). The darn fabric won't hold a crease! I can't get it to press properly; not even with massive amounts of steam. It's upsetting, because there are all these neat corners and inset pieces to show off.

Ignore the lint, please.

Another Entry Into My Own Mixed-Up Files

I recently watched Now, Voyager for the first time. It's beautiful, and may be one of my favorite Bette Davis movies. Her leading man (after a fashion) is played by Paul Henreid, but throughout the entire movie, I thought I was drooling over Charles Boyer.

Seriously, how identical are they? Very.

Anyway, back to the movie. Now, Voyager (based on the novel of the same name) is about a mousy, dowdy, plump old maid played by Bette Davis (insane, but [for once] not criminally so), who is nearly unrecognizable:

Those eyebrows are impressive.

She has been reduced to nearly nothing by her overbearing, demanding harpy of a mother, until her sweet sister-in-law decides to have a psychiatrist, Dr. Jacquith (Claude Raines!!!) step in. Charlotte, Bette's character, retires to his recuperative facility to have a nervous breakdown and lose weight. She then goes on a pleasure cruise.

On this cruise, she meets an exceptionally kind, interesting, and handsome man. His name is Jerry. They fall madly in love, and he understands completely about her illness and situation in life. Just as she understands his. He's married, you see, and very unhappily. They decide to spend five glorious days together in the fresh air of Rio.

Then they part, presumably forever. That is, until winter. They meet at a party. Charlotte, believing Jerry is lost to her, is engaged to be married to a well-intentioned, sincere, all-around stand-up guy. Who is also a widower. And boring. And not Jerry.

I uploaded my favorite scene to youtube, but it's not embeddable due to copyright claims. So go watch. I'll wait.

You're most likely crying. I'll give you a moment to recover.

I won't spoil the ending, but I will recommend (demand) that you see this movie. It's beautiful. There isn't really a 'happy ending' the way we're used to them, but the end is satisfying nonetheless.

For some reason, I always get Ray Milland and Robert Young confused. I know they don't look much alike (except that they're both men from the 30s, which is enough to make any onlooker squint), but for the life of me, I can't seem to recognize either one as himself in a movie.

Today was a good day. I have no class on Tuesday, so I got a lot of stuff done.

First, I rode my bicycle to the supermarket for groceries, and then to Target for a bike horn (much more fun than bells).

When I got home, I had a package waiting for me! It was a box of old Harlequin Presents novels--20 to be exact--from eBay. Here's a random sample of the delightful covers:

Then, after cleaning the floors and doing a load of laundry, I baked a cake!

It's vanilla with vanilla buttercream frosting. So sweet. So so so sweet.

Oh My Goodness!

Hello all! I'm so excited!

I've finally received affirmation of my stylishness! From the very talented Mary Danielson, authoress of Idle Fancy. I'm to reveal seven interesting/unknown facts about myself, and since I love talking about myself (who doesn't?) this should be easy!

Fact #1: I have a lot of lipsticks. When I say 'a lot,' I mean somewhere around 30. They're difficult to accurately number because I'm constantly misplacing and then finding tubes everywhere. Strangely enough, they're almost all in the same pink/coral color family!

A recent favorite is "Siren," by Revlon

Fact #2: There is a line in "The Philadelphia Story," one of my favorite movies, that I'm afraidsums up most of my life. Katharine Hepburn says to a crowd of wedding guests, "I've made a terrible fool of myself, which isn't unusual."

I'm very silly, you see, and that results in lots of silly goings-on, which in turn result in me being embarrassed by myself.

Fact #3: I'm currently in culinary school. I usually have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm good at faking it. I'm also not allowed to wear nail polish, but I am allowed to wear lipstick, so I consider it a fair compromise. I decided to go to culinary school after a harrowing couple of years of indecision. I finally realized that, like Kierkegaard warned, if I don't make my own decisions, someone else will make them for me. So I asked myself what it is I really want to do, and my reflexive desire was "bread!" Hence the uniform and mushroom hat.

Fact #4: I love old Harlequin Presents novel(la)s. The ones from the 80s, with their silly story-lines and exotic locales get to me the most. This is probably why "Romancing the Stone" is my favorite movie. Ever.

Yes, please!

Fact #5: Goes hand in hand with #4. I have a secret, incredibly fiery desire to become a romance novelist. I even have my nom de plume all picked out. I think I'd be excellent at it, too. I'm very good at overwrought emotional speeches.

Fact #6: I'm a counselor at a Hungarian church camp in the summertime. It's a rather big part of my life, and I love the sense of belonging I get when I go to a function like camp, or a bonfire, or ministers' conferences. There aren't very many Hungarian Reformed churches in the US, but they all know and care for each other, and being a part of that is wonderful.

Fact #7: I adore cats. Most of my friends would tell you that I am in serious danger of becoming a crazy cat lady in my golden years. But sometimes, sometimes I have this niggling little feeling deep down inside that I may, in fact, like dogs just a teensy little bit more. I only get this feeling when I'm around a big, old, cuddly, smelly dog. Newfoundlands tend to do the trick. Luckily for the cats and my own reputation, this doesn't happen very often.

Portfolio Dress

Simplicity 2245, also known as the Lisette Portfolio dress, is such a wonderful pattern. I love the little pockets, and kimono sleeves are a design feature to which I'm always attracted.

Here are some new pictures, as I just wasn't satisfied with the others. I've madeit up in black cotton sateen, which, as far as fabric weaves go, is a personal favorite. I cut out the tunic length because I like short dresses in the summertime, but decided that it was just a little too short, so instead of a proper hemming, the bottom is finished with bias tape. I also decided not to include the neck yoke, because I prefer a slightly lower decollete.

One of the bad things that I hadn't anticipated was that the black makes the lovely details of this dress nearly invisible. The interest seaming and top-stitched seams are all but lost. However, one of the good things is that the plain black makes statement necklaces and accessories that much more necessary!

Ones like this, handmade (by my sister!) of felted beads. You can also see the bias binding around the neck, and the turned-up cuffs of the sleeves (one of my favorite things!).

I hope to see more people make this pattern, as it's very attractive and comfortable. Oh, and easy! Did I mention that it's super simple? 'Cause it is.

Just for the fun of it, I decided to make a short video, with all views of the dress. It showcases the fact that it's not really fitted, and that cotton sateen wrinkles when a body sits in it for several hours.

Hulu is wonderful. Not only full to overflowing with lovely old westerns and fascinating documentaries, it also has a lot of older television shows. One of which is a new favorite.

Remington Steele.

I just started watching yesterday, and already I'm on the sixth episode. It's kind of like Murder, She Wrote, but younger. And with wittier banter (I'm such a sucker for witty banter!). In addition to that, it has that lovely soft 80s aesthetic I just love. The kind displayed so well by Victoria magazine. No neon or crazy permed hair to be found.

Two Navy Dresses

Hi all! I've finally gotten (dim and begrudgingly granted) pictures of Simplicity 2250.

I should know better than to choose linen by now. It wrinkles like the dickens, which to me cancels out all moisture-wicking properties. I'm hoping it's just projecting 'irreverently rumpled,' though.

In other news, I love this dress! I read that it tends to run short, so I added an inch-and-a-half to the bodice pieces, and it fits really well! I also made the matching jacket, which I also really like. It's fitted enough to look good unbelted, but not tight at all!

I've also made Simplicity 3823. It's some kind of heavy drapery fabric. I sincerely have no idea what it's made of.

It's kind of grosgrain-ish, but I'm not so sure grosgrain comes in actual fabric form. There is absolutely no stretch. I added pretty pink piping to the midriff and around the bottom of the skirt. This is the second dress I've made from this pattern, the first was pre-blog, pre-sewing skills, and long gone.

Oh my goodness. I am fairly overwhelmed by all the greatness coming from Simplicity these days. Indeed, I can barely wait for Friday, when they go on sale at Jo-Ann (finally! Those Lisettes will be mine).

I would personally wear it in navy. Or maybe navy on the bottom and peachy-pink on top. Seriously. This is the best jumpsuit pattern I've ever seen. Maybe.

Of the new patterns put out by Simplicity, this trio really caught my eye. there are some other nice ones, including two from Cynthia Rowley, if you're into the boxy look (again!).

Home, Once Again!

It's so good to be home; so many things are possible here that aren't at school. Not the least of which is the renewed ability to take pictures! My family is also all here at the moment, including the cats, which makes every day a super-fun and slightly exhausting cocktail of laughing and cooking and fighting and playing and enjoying (nearly) every moment!

Trying to find some time to sew. It seems that the dining room table is the only place I'm really comfortable sewing, and it's quite in demand, what with cats taking naps and mummies going through stacks of papers and sisters trying to follow their own crafty pursuits. They're all so selfish.

I know Me-Made-March outfit posts have stopped. Unfortunately, due to technical difficulties, pictures won't be forthcoming for a while. It's all right, though. My wardrobe is so small (tiny, in fact) that most of the outfits would be embarrassingly recognizable!

So, to recap the last four days, I've worn:

Day 5 - Brown houndstooth skirt with pink fluttery-ruffley top.

Day 6 - Navy blue wrap dress, with new cowboy linen jacket.

Day 7 - Gray tweed skirt with splatter-printed top

Day 8 (today!) - Navy blue cowboy dress, with matching jacket that I keep failing to pictorially document!

MMM - Day 4!

I finally have full length pictures of this jacket! It only took me a year-and-a-half!

It's Butterick 5335, in red cotton with a deep indigo silk twill lining. And wooden toggles.

Here's the back view, where you can see that I shortened the belt considerably, as it was completely shapeless as-is.

The dress is Simplicity 2281, which I previously told you about here. A view without the jacket:

As you can see, I modified the sleeve-y bit to be more off the shoulder, because I love that look, and I shortened the midriff band by about three inches. I love this dress, and I wear it all the time under sweaters. I can't wait to wear it in the summertime!

I've been having a wonderful time looking at others' outfits for Me-Made-March! And it's only four days in, so I expect it'll only get better!

MMM - Day 3!

Yesterday, I wore my black satin pants, breton-stripe t-shirt, and cowboy linen jacket (which I still haven't gotten a picture of).

Today, I wore the same black satin pants, navy polka-dot blouse, and ivory trench. Of this outfit, I do have a picture!

I tend to wear these pants a lot. They were made as part of the Hepburn/Hepburn project, and of (both of) the things I made, they are definitely my favorite.

Matchbook Magazine

This online magazine is absolutely delightful. The March issue just came out, and I've been through it twice, once thoroughly (and with a magnifying glass), and again to ogle all the pretty pictures!

I flatter myself that I'm a "Matchbook Girl," which (if my comprehensive reading skills are what they used to be) involves romance, adventure, and a healthy dose of vintage knick-knacks. All of which I (hope I) possess!

MMM - Day 1!

Today was the first day of Me-Made-March, and I wore this new(ish) dress:

Vintage McCall's 7599, but sleeveless! The deer-printed wool challis, paired with the cowboy belt and cashmere cardi made me feel extremely cute!

I don't think it's this stumpifying in real life. My roommate is just very tall. But anyway, there are lots of things I like about this dress. I like the fabric (although I was initially afraid the color would look ghastly on me), the collar, and the little buttons on the front! I also love the way it looks good with either black or brown accessories! That's true versatility!

So, day 1 of Me-Made-March is down. 30 to go!

My dress is finished. All that is left is to finish stitching down the binding on the jacket, which is completely adorable if I do say so myself. I haven't got a picture yet, though, because the weather has been a bit too cold lately. Tomorrow, though! Hopefully.

In other news, McCall's has apparently fallen in love with the romper. And so have I. I've always loved them, I've just never seen a modern pattern that I like; I can't buy one either, because my torso is usually too long for them to be comfortable. Enter McCall's 6331:

Remember last week when I mentioned Lisette patterns, and my plan to collect them on 5 for $5 pattern day? That dream was crushed. Hard.

Oh my goodness! Simplicity has really been on the ball lately (and making me glad for the 5 for $5 sale on Sunday!). First the SuedeSays collection, which I have to say, isn't my absolute favorite (Mostly because rompers? With a blouson top? Make me shudder.), but now they've come out with Lisette patterns. Which are completely gorgeous and wearable and perfectly styled (if in need of a few darts). There are four so far, and while I don't dislike any of them, I definitely have my favorite(s).

In order of most to least, they are:

2245, Portfolio. I'm thinking the short sleeve dress may replace Simplicity 2594 as my go-to summer pattern this year.

2209, Passport (aren't these names the best? They just add to the whole feel of the collection. And make me desire to own and make these garments even more!) I love the dress, the color schemes, and everything else about this pattern. Except the boxiness of the jacket. That is unacceptable.

2211, Market. Aren't the tabs on this skirt adorable?

And finally, 2246, Traveler. While I appreciate the sentiment and color schemes, I can't help but find this one a little boring. But totes wearable and cute like everything else in this collection.

Simplicity 2281

Hello all!

Gosh, it's been a long while since I've posted, no? I wish I could say that I've been busy with all sorts of exciting projects, but that would be a lie. I've been busy with classes and socializing and things that leave my sewing machine dusty.

However, since I've been home for Christmas vacation, I've been able to make this dress, Simplicity 2281:

I'm also showcasing my lovely Christmas gift. An adjustable dressform! Unfortunately, the measurements are a little off. For example, many of my garments won't completely fasten, because she's a little thicker in the waist than they would like. She's also not as well-padded up top as I would like in order for my garments to look well fitted. But she gets the job done for now, and I have hopes for adjustments to be made.

This fabric is a lovely reproduction feed sack that I purchased from the lovely Anna at wildflowers::pretty.

I really like this dress. It's flattering and colorful and I just love interesting sleeve/neckline treatments. It's definitely my favorite of all the Cynthia Rowley patterns. Mostly because the others are, um, sack-like. I'm already planning to make it up again, when the weather is a little warmer.

Hey all!

I'm away at school right now, and have more work than I anticipated. Consequently, my sewing time has dropped off sharply. I was able to get this little number out of the way recently, though. I used the navy/black/silver silk suiting I mentioned before, and just measured out pleats according to a kilt plan in a vintage sewing book. It came out rather nicely, I think.

I'm currently working on (if I can find the time!) place mats and Christmas things. I've found some inspirational links so far, which have convinced me that it's never too early to think about Christmas!

First are these lovely little things. I want to make bunting, and an advent calendar out of them.

Next up are these ornaments. They're charming, and would be nice in felt, I think.

I've also been looking through old magazines for inspiration, and can't wait until the weekend, when I get to go home for a visit! I'll look through crafty books, make cake with my sister, and see my family. I have to admit that I'm a little homesick these days.

I know Self Stitched September updates have been, well, reduced to less than a trickle recently, but I do have a good excuse!

I'm leaving for school in a few days, and I've been in a frenzy of socializing, packing, and shopping these past two weeks. I even traveled to Vermont for a few days! Wearing Self-Stitched garments all the time!

So, in apology, because I still don't have any new pictures (they've slipped my mind, unfortunately) of my new things (a kilt and a fixed-up dress!), I'll leave you with this delightful video of the delightful Roy Clark.

SSS Day 14!

I know, I know. I skipped days 11 through 13. I wore self-stitched garments those days, but I wasn't able to get pictures. I just repeated outfits those days anyway. (I tend to wear the same outfit two days in a row, if I haven't spilled anything on it.)

SSS Day 10!

I wore yesterday's outfit to movie night. Which is when I invite people over and we watch movies. Not to be confused with board game night, which is something we don't have in this household.

Here we have my new top, Vogue 1197, a shortened version of view B, and my satin cropped trousers from the Hepburn/Hepburn sew-along.

I really liked working with this pattern. The sleeves were done in a very interesting way. One that includes spirals! Or, a u-curve. I like the word 'spiral' better. This is a lovely, cozy shirt for the Autumn.

I'm so glad it's starting (finally!) to feel like autumn. Last night, with my window thrown wide open, I was actually cold enough to use a flannel sheet! It was heaven.

SSS 7, 8, and 9

Oh my goodness. I don't know whether to blame myself for being lazy or blame my photographers for being procrastinators. I don't have pictures of September 7th or 8th. And yesterday, the 9th, got the worst of indoor shots. I even had to cut my head off, that's how bad it is.

Anyway, on the 7th, I wore a tan and black houndstooth skirt that I made years before I ever started this blog. It was my first okay garment ever, and I was very proud of it.

The 8th, I wore store-bought shorts and a linen tank that I made using Simplicity 2586, view D shortened. Kinda boring, I know, but I spent the day talking to a financial office and cleaning the bathroom.

Yesterday, the 9th, I wore the tan houndstooth skirt again: It's a testament to the durability of polyester/acrylic doubleknit, this skirt. I wear it at least once a week in the Autumn/Winter and I have been for the past four years or so, and it hasn't needed repair once. All it requires is a infrequent shave to get the pills off. I love it.

I used vintage Simplicity 9099, view 1.

I wore it out to the sewing machine/vacuum repair store. To pick up my machine! It was away getting a tune-up. I was a little embarrassed when I got there, because the man who brought it out looked back to the repair room and called to the other guy there, "This is the one from yesterday!" When I asked, he told me that my machine was so loud, it attracted all the employees to the repair room. He then asked how long it's been since I've had it repaired. Sigh.

SSS Days 5 & 6 (Now With Scarecrows!)

Yesterday and today I wore basically the same outfit. The only things that changed were my shoes. (And underpants, of course!)

I am pleased nonetheless to present my latest Finished Object:

It's an encore of Simplicity 3673. I made it as part of my Autumn wardrobe plan, and I'm tickled that it also fits into the Hepburn/Hepburn Sewalong. This jumper dress reminds me of something Katharine would have worn in a movie like Deskset (one of my favorites), although perhaps not in this color!

Neither is the 'Corn Rustler.'

The fabric is a lovely, thick, velvety corduroy. It's difficult to see in this picture, but there is a pleated trim detail at the neckline that, along with the color, softens the almost severe simplicity of the dress. It's a new favorite, and one that I predict will be in heavy rotation this Autumn/Winter, over and under blouses and sweaters!

Yesterday, September 3, I wore this outfit again. Nothing spectacular.

Today, however, was the world debut of my new pants. Also known as my Audrey pants.

At first, I was afraid that the satin would look like pajamas. After finishing them, though, I'm sure I can wear them out and about!

Things I love about these pants are:

the cropped length (Very Audrey, no?)
easy fit through seat and thighs (I'm not used to being constricted)
the lovely slippery fabric.

Needless to say, I'm a fan!

I used Vogue 8397, view B, without the side tabs or front/back seams. Shortened quite a lot for my stumpy limbs.

I'm participating in Self-Stitched September. I predict repetition.

Today, in preparation, I washed all of my self-stitched garments (which weren't clean, that is) and put them all in the same place in my drawers. In their respective, part-of-the-body-they-cover drawers. (Skirts/pants, tops/sweaters, etc.)

I also finished a new pair of pants. They're heavy black cotton satin. Sat(i/ee)n, that is, because I can't quite classify the fabric. I like them, though. I'll get a good picture as soon as I can finagle it and show them! They're also part of the Hepburn/Hepburn Sew-Along. I'm please with how they turned out, although I altered the pattern so much it's unrecognizable.

I have a pink corduroy jumper to hem, and plan to get started directly.

In other news, I've just finished An Echo in the Bone, and I'm exhausted. I reread the whole series in preparation, and goodness! I keep forgetting how emotionally draining those books can be!

So I checked out some fluffy Christmas themed romance novels from the library. Which I recently rediscovered! I love the library! It's free, did you know that? You can just take books and DVDs home with you, and you don't have to pay!
(I'm joking just a little here. Everyone knows you have to pay with your firstborn to get the really good librarian's service.)

My Autumn Sewing Plan

I almost never sew with much of a plan. I tried to get into that a bit more this summer, with the Summer Essentials Sew-Along, and I think it went rather well. I'm now starting to make up my plan for a new Autumn wardrobe. Or, rather, the new additions to said wardrobe. (My wardrobe has a very slow turnover rate.)stones & Telephones has another sew-along: The Hepburn Hepburn Project. I'm participating, and hoping it'll give me enough motivation to actually

Anyways, I perused Style.com a bit, and looked at some fabric that I've been collecting over the warmer months, and came up with the things I'll be making.

(Ahem.)

1. Cigarette pants. You know, slim, leg-skimming, ankle-length trousers. In black satin. Heavy, non-stretch, slightly dull (cotton!) satin. I never knew that satin came in cotton, but this fabric is not sateen. I don't have a picture yet, or a pattern picked out (suggestions would be appreciated!), but this is definitely a much-needed article of clothing. As of this summer, I have no more long pants left. I cut off my last pair for the above-mentioned mission trip.

2. A pink jumper/dress. Another Simplicity 3673, in wide-wale pink corduroy.

I'll be making the shorter, slim skirt view without the belt. I'll be adding my own trim. This jumper will coordinate nicely with a lot of my blouses and sweaters.

3. I want to make a jersey top as well, with this other recent Fabric.com purchase: I don't know yet which pattern to use, but I'm leaning toward Vogue 1197 I'll just have to wait for Vogue patterns to go on sale again.

4. I want to buy some plaid wool for a button-front skirt. I can always use more skirts.

5. A suit. I have one, but it's brown, and I don't like wearing head-to-to brown. So I use it as separates most of the time. But I digress. I bought this silk suiting earlier this year, and intend to make one of these two suits with it:

6. I have this gorgeous silk velvet burnout:

I'm thinking a lovely little shift style dress will do it justice. I don't want to break up the pattern too much, so something simple will be best, I think. I have a few vintage shift patterns, so I'll have to think about it a little more.

And that's it! I do want to make another blouse, maybe in green, and perhaps a dress from a stable knit. We'll have to see what time and funds allow!

Rereadings

This is what I've been reading today. I found it at the library yesterday afternoon, and starting reading it after dinner. So far I like it, and it's made me think and reflect on books that I've loved.

A book that I always think about is "Jane Eyre.'' It's even mentioned in the foreward as an ideal 'old friend.' The book to reach for when one is downed with the flu. Another one I pause at when skimming the shelves is "Vanity Fair." (It's probably guilt. I never finished reading it.)

It started me thinking also of the books I was attached to before my anglophile phase. E.L. Konigsburg was a huge celebrity in my pre-adolescent days. I know everyone and their mother loves "From the Mixed-up Files," but I was all about "Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth." This was one of the few books with which I shared prime bed real estate. I don't know what happened to that book. I doubt it's still in the house. I may have to go look for another copy.

One of the common threads in "Rereadings" is that books change for us as we get older. Our perceptions of the books and our reactions to them change, that is. I'm almost afraid to reread "Jennifer, Hecate..." again because it might not be all that I remember. (It's been maybe eight to ten years.)

Maybe I'll start easy and finish "Vanity Fair" after all...

Turquoise Gingham

I just learned how to make click-able pictures! I'm very proud of myself.

I had my mother take a picture of me in my newest dress today. We went to see "Despicable Me" at the movie theater. Of course, I didn't realize that my belt was all flipped up until afterwards. Apparently neither did she (which is odd, because she can tell when my socks are slouchy, or my underpants are showing at 50 paces).

It's Simplicity 2594. This is the third garment I've made using this particular pattern, which is a new record.

I just love the yoke/dropped shoulder detail. And the kimono/cap sleeves. And how simple/fast it is to make (I've been averaging 3 hours from scissors-locating to fully accessorizing in front of my mirror).

I think this may be the last of my summer sewing, though. This month is looking even busier than the last, and by the time September rolls around all I'm thinking are Autumn hues and knee-high boots.

I'll leave you with a(n awful) picture of the second project from this pattern. It was taken in the rainforest of the Dominican Republic, while we were desperately searching for a waterfall that was perpetually "right over this next hill."

I look really sweaty because I am really sweaty.

OH! I got this picture from my camera. I thought it was acting up and had wiped my memory card, but it turns out the little bugger wasn't pushed in all the way! I can be very bright sometimes. I do have a full length picture of it, but it isn't pretty. Suffice to say that it looks just like the gingham one, but with a floral paisley pattern.

What a July!

I'm sorry for my long absence, but I've been away from home and living out of a suitcase for nearly the whole month past. I started July with a mission trip to the Dominican Republic, and just got back yesterday from my Church Camp.

Both were absolutely amazing.

As were my wardrobes.

From The America's Test Kitchen Family Baking Book

Buttermilk Caramel Cake

Makes one 13 by 9-inch sheet cake

CAKE

2 3/4 cups cake flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

3/4 teaspoon salt

16 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

1 3/4 cups granulated sugar

4 large eggs, room temperature

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups buttermilk, room tempurature

1. Adjust an oven rack to the middle position and heat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 13 by 9-inch baking pan, then line the bottom with parchment paper. Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl.

2. In a large bowl, beat the butter and granulated sugar together with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy (I didn't use my electric mixer because I didn't feel like digging it out of the cupboard, and my cake turned out very nice anyway). Beat in the eggs, one at a time, until combined, about 30 seconds. Beat in the vanilla.

3. Reduce the mixer speed to low and beat in one third of the flour mixture, followed by half of the buttermilk. Repeat with half of hte remaining flour mixture and the remaining buttermilk. Beat in the remaining flour mixture until just incorporated.

4. Give the batter a final stir with a rubber spatula to make sure it is thoroughly combined. Scrape the batter into the prepared pan, smooth the top and gently tap the pan on the counter to settle the batter. Bake the cake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out witha few moist crumbs attached, 25 to 30 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through baking.

CARAMEL FROSTING

8 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 cup packed dark brown sugar

1/4 cup whole milk

2 cups confectioners' sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. Bring the butter and brown sugar to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is foamy, 3 to 5 minutes. Whisk in the milk, return the mixture ot a brief boil, then remove from the heat. Stir in the confectioners' sugar and vanill a with a wooden spoon and beat the frosting until smooth, 2 to 3 minutes. Spread the warm frosting evenly over the surface of the cooled cake and let set, about 25 minutes, before serving.

My family really liked this cake. A lot. It's very moist and light, and the caramel frosting is not too sweet as it sometimes can be.

I hope you enjoy making (and eating!) this cake as much as I did.

So, March 1990 was right around the time I was born. I like the idea of my mother flipping through her monthly issue of Victoria, gazing at all the Laura Ashley and chintz slipcovers, while being very very pregnant. With twins.

I found it recently in the basement and found the picture that I would like to think represents my summer wardrobe (but really doesn't.)

Pink Linen Blouse

I've just made a new blouse from vintage McCall's 7330. I slightly modified the pattern to button in the back. I think it's cuter and more flattering in real life.

I've been wearing this top since I finished the last buttonhole Wednesday night. (Not non-stop, of course!), but based on these photographs, I'm kind of feeling ambivalent toward it.

My cat likes it, though!

I really liked the pattern, and it uses a very small amount of fabric, so I think I'll make it once more in a fabric with more drape/less wrinkle action. Just to make sure.

New Patterns, Part Deux!

So, as stated in the previous post, I recently won 16 patterns from some guy on ebay. (Is it called winning if you're the only person bidding?)

I love most of them. So I thought I'd share.

These are two sets of separates that I adore. Especially 7418, there on the right. I've already started the top from 7330 in pink linen, but it's slow going because I decided to give it back buttons, and now I'm having fitting issues. Oh well.

I have a few plans for 7418. Later this Autumn, I plan to make the skirt and long coat as a matching suit, maybe in pink. I was thinking turquoise, but I read somewhere that

"Turquoise is like the word 'ain't'. Quaint when seldom used, but vulgar in large doses."

Which, on further reflection, appears to be true. So pink is the way to go. (Unless forest green turns out to be the way to go.)

Anyway. The writing you see on both envelopes is done by the same hand, as well as the writing on most of the other envelopes. These patterns belonged to either Rose Bianchi, or a woman who sewed quite a lot for Rose. Why would Rose put her name on all of them, along with what she wanted to change? Or put her name above a telephone number and the words "before 11 AM?" Mysteries, I tell you!

You can see that she had a lot to say about this particular pattern. She even redrew the shape of the bolero. And added sleeves. She was a very modest woman. There are two other patterns where she added to the neckline. 7330 above is one of them.

This one, I think, is very cute. That collar! All that pink! She apparently made the dress and the long coat (those pattern pieces were cut out and shortened, anyway).

Last, but not least, are these two patterns. When I first saw them, I was struck by how similar they are. They were even published in the same year (1964)! On closer inspection, however, differences make themselves known.

The dress on the left has princess seams, for instance, while the one on the right has dart shaping and a center front seam. The center front seams are the main difference. As well as the number of pattern pieces.

Only one of these patterns is cut. It is the half size pattern, so I think Rose ('s dressmaker) might have bought 7599, and then seen the half size pattern, and made the latter instead. I'm personally more partial to 7599, because I find princess seams a bear to fit to my frame. And the collar is particularly lovely. (Bless her heart, she had just as much a love for collars as I do.)

This is just an overview of my recent good fortune. ($9.50! Including shipping!) I hope to show more of these lovely patterns as time goes on. And maybe even make a few!

New Patterns!

Darlings, I'm so excited! I just won a lot of 16 patterns from ebay. 16!

The best thing?

They're almost all my size!

I'm giving away three, however, that are not my size. (Well, two that are not my size. The other I'm just not very fond of.)

The three:

I haven't checked them for completeness, but the other ones I've checked have all been complete (and folded the way I fold patterns, which is to say, with total disregard for their original fold lines.)

They may be shortened, because she even shortened a half-size pattern about an inch. Luckily, the tape is brittle and comes off easily leaving no damage and little marks.

Anyway, the way to win these patterns is to be the first to claim whichever you like. Which is pretty easy, right?

The patterns are:

McCall's 3102, in size 18 1/2, 41" bust

I made these early this morn'. Just thought I'd share a few pictures!

All stuck together-like. Kind of cozy looking, actually.

Look at the way the glaze just drizzles down.

These were so good. And they weren't even yeasted! I just got a feeling (hankering?) for cinnamon rolls this morning, and decided to make some. I made them whole wheat because I was given a bag of whole wheat flour and need to use it up. I just replaced one cup of white flour from the recipe. (Which called for 2 1/2, so it wasn't too much)

Something New?

Darlings, I've been planning to do some sewing lately.

I know I have a lot of finished projects (a skirt, two dresses and a blouse, to be exact) that I still haven't shown you, but I just can't seem to get them photographed. Either I'll wear them and forget to take the camera along, or the camera won't have a memory card, or I'll remember the camera but be wearing store-bought clothes. It's a never-ending circle of my memory failing.

Anyway.

I saw this jacket by Land's End Canvas recently:

So I planned on recreating it, but then I had a thought. Why not just take the feel of it (blue striped seersucker) but make this little number I've had my eye on for some time?

Why not indeed! It's McCall's 5817. I once made a muslin of the trousers, and was promptly reminded of why I don't ever wear them. But now I'm thinking about the sleeveless jacket. Which will hopefully be a little more flattering! (Yay princess seams!)

It's so a plan.

New Jacket!

Hello!

I made myself a new jacket using Butterick 5335, view A.

It's perfect for spring-like weather! Unfortunately, the only full length shot I have is half shadowed, so this is the only decent picture of it. But trust me! It's cute.

I used red cotton/linen twill, with a deep blue silk twill lining. Instead of an invisible snap closure, I used wooden toggles. Which just add a little something, I feel. I also put a binding on the sleeve cuffs, instead of whatever craziness Butterick was telling me to do.

OH! Those sleeves! You can't see it yet, but those sleeves are balloons. In a good way. It was instant love the moment I tried them on. Instant.

This weather. I swear. Starting Sunday, the 7th, there was abundant sun, fewer cold winds, and spring seemed near. Today, however, is grey. Very grey.

I was planning on getting a few of my recently completed projects photographed, but I missed my opportunity. They're warm-weather garments, and I'd like to take them in sunlight. And not hidden under a parka. Which I do not own.

Later, I suppose.

Wild West Burgers!

Okay Darlings,

As you may know, I love cowboys. And pretty much anything else western-ly. So when I found a recipe in Volume 17 of our treasured Woman's Day Encyclopedia of Cookery, Ghe-Has, I was all like "I will make these. Tonight." (I speak in italics a lot.) You should too (make them, I mean). They are so so yum.

Anyway, that recipe was (and still is) "Wild West Hamburger." By Mary Hemingway. Yes, Hemingway. She shares a related anecdote with us:

"Here are some of Ernest's and my favorite ways of dealing with
ground beef and some hamburger ideas, including the Wild West Hamburger, which I
invented to fortify us for tramping through sagebrush after pheasant, partridge,
or ducks, or, after such hikes, to console us for not having shot our
limits."

Name dropping, indeed!

Here's the recipe:

WILD WEST HAMBURGER

1 pound ground lean beef
1 heaping teaspoon dried sage
1/2 teaspoon mixed-herb seasoning (I just used some cajun seasoning)
1/2 teaspoon monosodium glutamate (I don't even know what this is.)
1/2 teaspoon sugar
Salt and pepper
2 spring onions, or shallots, finely chopped (I used scallions.)
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 heaping teaspoon India relish
2 tablespoons capers
1 tablespoon minced parsley, or 1 tablespoon dried
1 egg, beaten
1/3 cup dry white wine (I used cooking sherry)
2 tablespoons oil for frying

Break up the meat with a fork and thoroughly mix with dry ingredients and then wet ingredients, except oil. Let the bowl sit at room temperature for at least 1/2 hour. make 4 fat, juicy patties which are soft but not runny.
There is only one correct way to fry a hamburger, I think, just as there is only one correct way to fry an egg.
Have oil in your skillet hot but not smoking when you drop in the patties, then turn the heat down, or take the pan off the heat for a minute. Fry the burgers for 4 minutes. Take the pan off the heat and turn the heat high again. Flip the burgers over, put the pan back on the high heat, and let them sizzle 1 minute. Lower the heat again and cook another 3 minutes. Both sides of the burgers should be crispy brown and the middle pink and juicy, and GOOD.
Makes 2 servings.

To which I say: My, that's a complicated way to cook hamburgers.
Also: 2 servings? Tramping after partridge must be very taxing.

These hamburgers were so good. I just topped them with tomato slices, and a little bit of A1, and seriously, they were delicious. I'm so glad there are four servings (if you're me), because we can have them for lunch again tomorrow!

I don't have pictures, because we've already devoured the two I made for dinner, and the other two are all wrapped up in the fridge for the night.

That's what my new skirt is full of!

It's a simple dirndl skirt, but with a shaped midriff band. Mostly drafted from the very popular tutorial on Gertie's New Blog for Better Sewing.

It's difficult to see, but the band comes to a point in the front. Which I think kind of western, to go along with the cowboy fabric.

Style Blogs?

It's not my intention to turn this into a style blog. Mostly because I don't really know how, but also because I like the lack of direction thing we have going on, and I don't want to jeopardize that, you know?

I have been thinking lately, though, about my personal style. About why, it seems to me, it's so boring. At least when it comes time to take pictures, or appear in public.

In the house, closeted like an invalid as I am increasingly often in this weather, one would swear that I am influenced and in love with ze eccentric, ze crazy print, ze pants-full-ness.

Yet, when I am faced with the outside world and the people passing in cars and the "you never know who'll you'll run into!" mentality inherited from my mother, I lose my nerve.

Which kills me inside. Because I advocate (strongly!) the concept of, well, everything opposite to the loss of clothing nerve.

(Clothing nerve? Yeah, we'll go with that.)

I have (true story!) a brilliantly embroidered black bolero that I have never worn. Even though it's gorgeous. Even though I love it. Even though I keep it hung on the wall, that's seriously how pretty it is.

My mission this coming week (if I can dig my way out of this fallout shelter of a house) is to wear that lovely creature. And then maybe I'll start wearing some of my other pieces (for they aren't mere clothes!).

I have taken a Wilton Cake Decorating Class or two in my time. In fact, I've just finished one. Our last class was centered around decorating this "Basketweave Cake." Which didn't turn out too much like a basket, but there you go.

In this picture you can also catch a glimpse of my new dress, Vogue 1102, unpressed and unhemmed. But I was only showing it off, so it was all right. More pictures to come, when it's complete.

Yes, I know. That cake is very yellow (much like my teeth. What was going on there, dare I ask?). And let me tell you, if you'd ever tried the Wilton recipe for 'buttercream,' you wouldn't care either. Suffice to say, they achieve that unearthly (pasty?) whiteness with shortening.

Yes. Crisco frosting.

But Garnet, I hear you asking, doesn't that make your sink all greasy?

Yes.

Doesn't it coat the inside of your mouth with the heavy lining of the soulless?

Yes.

You, my friend, are asking all the right questions.

Some Inspiration

I've actually been a little productive lately. I've made a skirt, hemmed another that was sitting around for a while, made a blouse, and cut out a dress. I unfortunately don't have any pictures at the time, because I'm lazy and the light's been horrible, but I'll see what I can do later in the week.

I would like to share a few links that I have found enjoyable these past few days.

The first is this. It's just adorable, and seems so easy. I think I'll be making one up very soon.
Perhaps in the scraps of the dress I've just cut out.

The second link is to a Lemon Sponge Pudding. I made it on Thursday, and it was sooo good! I swear. And so easy! And did I mention it was delicious? We had a few friends over, and it was all gone in the wink o' an eye, as my imaginary Scottish grandmother would say.

But anyway, I cannot recommend this recipe enough. Especially not if you have these.

The third (and sadly final) link I'm going to share with all of you (imaginary or mute, I'm not sure) readers is this one.

It's a movie, so it's a bit of a time commitment, but it's also worth it. Just to warn you, though, there's a bit of (kind of gratuitious, in my opinion) nudity. And peeing. Maybe a little too much peeing.

It's Christmas Time!

It's finally Christmas, as I'm sure you darlings know, and we've been busy like fiends lately. With the baking, and the gift wrapping, and the card-sending, we've just been running ragged.

But soft! What is this? Santa Claus?

Oh no. Nevermind. It's just Jamie getting ready for our Christmas party. See how filthy his hat is with dustbunnies and suchlike? He never takes care of his things.

And Bandit, well, how could we have Santa without one of his trusty elves?

Unfortunately this is the best picture we have, because the minute he was away from our arms, he immediately tried to shake his hat off.

But our Christmas party was a lot of fun. Small and intimate (which is another way of saying that we did it so last minute, half of the people didn't even show up).

Hulu's library is startlingly vast.

At the moment they have Mystery Science Theater 3000!

I know! I'm rather excited myself, darling!

They only have five episodes, but seeing as how each episode is a full movie, I don't really mind too much.

Also, since we're on the subject, why did the Sci-Fi channel change the spelling of their name to the supremely ridiculous 'Syfy'? It's as though they don't like me anymore, and all I can do in retaliation is not watch.

Except, of course, the traditional (ritualistic?) 'Twilight Zone' marathon on New Year's.

Pattern Sales Are a Thing of Beauty

Oh my Darlings,

I stumbled upon a marvelous pattern sale today at Jo-Ann's. It was Butterick. They were $.99. I got 5.

Three were silly house item types, mostly for my mother (although one included some nifty fabric magazine baskets that may be worth some time). The other two are lovely 'Retro' Butterick patterns.

I was drawn in by the sash. I also think that, if this turns out well, it could be very nice for a series of simple sundresses next spring and summer.

Unfortunately, I haven't anywhere to wear a frock of this magnitude, but hope springs eternal! I think the bodice drape/conveniently attached shawl is very clever.

Green Dresses

Sorry for the long absence. I simply have had nothing to talk about. We've been boring and bored here, and that was a direct cause of my neglect. So sorry!

Anyway, my sweets, I have just finished my new green wool dress. It's very English, Lady-of-the-Manor, don't you think? With the tartan and all that. Please disregard the wrinkling and whatnot.

This was made from Vintage Pattern McCall's 6626. I especially love the contrast collar:

Once again, disregard the wrinkling. I have not yet had the pleasure of steaming the poor thing into submission.

We also have the most darling kittens in our backyard. We feed them, and sometimes they let us pet them. There was at first a batch of black and white kittens a few months ago, and just recently their mother had another litter of kittens. Most of them were taken away by Animal Control, but one was left behind. His name is Sparkles. He is all black, and the cutest abandoned kitten you ever did see.

Here he is hiding behind our slightly broken fence:

He's got such sad little eyes, no?

Our inside cats are kind of jealous.

This is one of the older cats that hangs around. His name is Matthew.

He is also hiding behind our broken section of fence.

Isn't he a sweetheart?

Well, I'm afraid I've stalled a bit on that dress described in post 1 of this blog. I must confess, I've only been working on very small projects lately. Things like mending, embroidery, and this small brooch:

It's felt with an applique'd silhouette. The red border is a strand of thick wooly yarn overstitched with navy thread. The book it's lying on is "Better Than Beauty: A Guide To Charm," which is delightful. I mean it.

But anyway.

Small projects like this one make me feel so good about myself. Because it's nearly instant gratification, I can feel like I've accomplished something every day!

Do you (my imaginary readers) like small things, easily whipped up, that provide quick satisfaction, or the long, hard-won battle of a big project?

Oh my Darlings. I feel like I should apologize for the truly terrible pictures from yesterday's post. You see, I can't find my camera. It's awful, because I could have sworn I'd taken some pictures of my cat posing with some Hungarian reverends last weekend. And now it's missing. So I had to make do with a six-year-old Kodak. It has a viewfinder! On a digital camera!

It's a vestigial viewfinder, is what it is.

But anyway, as much as I hate to apologize (normally I try not to do anything requiring apology), it is my duty to say that it's me, not you.

My Sweets, this is the moment you've been waiting for. I have obtained top-secret photographs of a jumper. One I made!

This particular jumper was made from Simplicity 3673. View B.

As you can see, Darlings, the fabric is a rather busy (also known as fun) heart argyle print corduroy. Possibly the best thing I've ever gotten from Jo-Ann's. Unfortunately my lipstick in this picture was unfit for public consumption. Much like the rather, well, I think we'll go with rustic step near my calves.

Also, that whitish spot near my hand is, I suspect, a spot of dust or something similar on the camera. Not my dress.

There are, of course, a few mistakes/creative liberties that I made in the making of the above jumper. However, I am certainly not going to point them out.

I quite liked this pattern. I found it easy to use, and while I probably could have cut a size or two smaller, it all worked out in the end!

Autumn Inspiration

I'd like to share with you some of my recent vintage inspiration. These first two pictures were lifted from the marvelous, inimitable, informative, and gorgeous Couture Allure

The first is my idea of perfect autumn casual dressing. One thing you may learn about moi is that I love red. I especially love red velvet, but red of any sort will do. The next picture is a beautiful suit (or two) in my other favorite color, green.

Green goes with wool like red goes with velvet in my mind. Absolutely the best autumn combination. I promise!

This is my blog. It is named after some awful red satin I purchased a while ago that is sitting on the table to my left, making me feel guilty and wasteful. At this very moment, it is set upon a pattern I purposefully selected for it, Simplicity 2586.

It's only polyester, but what can one do?

In other news, I have started this blog to show off. Because I sew a bit, and I bake a bit, and I know a bit about this and that. And that is all. I think, tomorrow when the light is better, I'll take pictures of some recent projects.
